{"id":3614,"date":"2017-11-14T10:41:46","date_gmt":"2017-11-14T15:41:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gnhuu.org\/?p=3614"},"modified":"2017-11-14T10:44:27","modified_gmt":"2017-11-14T15:44:27","slug":"sunday-november-5-2017-surprisingly-liberal-lessons-from-the-bible-is-god-gay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gnhuu.org\/index.php\/2017\/11\/14\/sunday-november-5-2017-surprisingly-liberal-lessons-from-the-bible-is-god-gay\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday, November 5, 2017, &#8220;Surprisingly Liberal Lessons from the Bible: Is God Gay?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(c) Doug Slagle, Minister to the Gathering at Northern Hills, All Rights Reserved.<\/p>\n<p>You may listen to the message by clicking here or see below to read it.<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-3614-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/gnhuu.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GNH-Nov-5-2017.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/gnhuu.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GNH-Nov-5-2017.mp3\">http:\/\/gnhuu.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GNH-Nov-5-2017.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p class=\"p2\">\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">This past Tuesday was the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther publishing his 95 protests against the Catholic Church.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That act stands as one of the most significant events in human history not because of its implications for Christianity, but because Luther asserted the freedom of individuals to think for themselves.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One does not need a Priest, Pope or King to determine what to believe. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Luther claimed, however, that the Bible is the only source for understanding god and her teachings.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many critics say that claim made the Bible an idol &#8211; a human made thing that is worshipped apart from its meaning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For us, it would be like worshipping the flaming chalice instead of the ideals it represents. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Conservative Christians and Jews worship the Bible like an idol by claiming its verses mean exactly what they say and that they should be understood <\/span><span class=\"s2\">literally.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They mostly ignore the context of those verses or how ancient words were and are translated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> For today\u2019s message that I\u2019ve entitled <b>\u201cSurprisingly Liberal Lessons from the Bible: God is Gay\u201d<\/b>, I believe that such a literal approach to understanding the Bible negatively influences how people consider homosexuality.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Bible verses that supposedly speak against it have been misinterpreted or wrongly translated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That has led to discrimination and persecution of gays, lesbians and transexuals.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> I believe the overall message of the Bible is that god is love &#8211; a statement which the Bible itself makes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>While I don\u2019t believe god is a theistic being floating on a heavenly cloud, whatever she is &#8211; or is not, she is a force for truth and love.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Everything and everyone that <\/span><span class=\"s2\">manifests<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> those qualities are therefore god-like.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>God is thus gay but also straight, bisexual, transexual and all other identities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>God is not <\/span><span class=\"s2\">just<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> one form of love, she is <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>ALL<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> forms of love.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> That understanding is dramatically different from that of religious conservatives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The problem with their thinking is a refusal to be open minded to different or ongoing interpretation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Indeed, despite scientific and social justice advances, conservative Christians and Jews still literally believe Bible verses indicate the earth is six-thousand years old, that women are to be subservient to men, that homosexuals are abominations, and that African-Americans are deficient because they are descendants from one of Noah\u2019s cursed sons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> These beliefs are not just private ones by people who have a right to believe as they wish.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are interpretations that have been forced into our laws, textbooks, and popular opinion.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My message today will be one, I hope, that provides \u201carrows of truth\u201d we can use against <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>false<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> interpretations of the Bible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> I\u2019ve elaborated in past messages how I was treated by a former church when I came out as gay.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I was told by members and fellow ministers that I was possessed by the devil and was destined for hell.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The six so-called homosexual \u201cclobber\u201d Bible verses were read to me as if I did not know them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>People defined me by one small part of who I am, and thus dehumanized me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I was no longer a friend or minister &#8211; with strengths and flaws like any other person.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I was a disgusting person worthy of death &#8211; all words from their interpretation of the Bible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> What happened to me was nothing compared to what has happened &#8211; and still happens &#8211; to millions of gay men and women.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nineteen years ago Matthew Shepard was abducted, beaten, tied to a fence and left to die in Laramie, Wyoming &#8211; because he was gay.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Less than fifty years ago, men and women in the US were regularly arrested for visiting gay bars.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not much more than a hundred years ago, men and women in England and the U.S. were imprisoned for being homosexual &#8211; Oscar Wilde being the most prominent.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Today, in nations from Russia to Uganda, gay men and women live in fear of being found out, imprisoned, tortured and killed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>All of those actions are justified by people who cite verses from the Bible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> But the Bible verses they cite are falsely interpreted.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Indeed, the Bible\u2019s six verses that are used to condemn homosexuality actually teach against attitudes of greed, cruelty and lust.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are also several verses which can arguably be interpreted as <\/span><span class=\"s2\">endorsing<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> homosexuality and that even suggest Jesus and other Biblical characters were gay. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> The oldest term for homosexuality is sodomy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s a pejorative term that should rarely be used.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It comes from the Biblical book of Genesis, chapter 19, which tells a story about the mythical town Sodom.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Two angels, disguised as men, visit Lot and his family who live in Sodom.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One evening a mob of the town\u2019s men gather outside Lot\u2019s door.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They demand that Lot force his two guests outside so that the mob can rape them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lot is horrified and refuses to comply.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As the mob becomes more insistent, Lot offers to send out his two daughters instead.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The story is deeply troubling and says something more significant about how ancient cultures treated women then it supposedly does about homosexuality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> The disguised angels are not raped but god angrily destroys Sodom.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Only Lot and his family are allowed to escape &#8211; even though Lot\u2019s wife is turned into a pillar salt for looking back longingly at her hometown.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As a result of this myth, the word \u2018sodomy\u2019 has been &#8211; and still is &#8211; used to <\/span><span class=\"s2\">derisively<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> refer to homosexuality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> What Bible interpreters, translators and preachers have historically refused to do, however, is teach the Bible\u2019s own reason for why Sodom was destroyed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is what the Biblical book Ezekiel, chapter 16, says:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> <b><i>Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were <\/i><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b><i>arrogant, overfed and unconcerned<\/i><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>;\u00a0they did <\/i><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b><i>not<\/i><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b><i> help the poor and needy.<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> The Bible itself says it was <\/span><span class=\"s2\">not<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> homosexuality that made god destroy Sodom.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead, the wealthy town had become abusive and uncaring toward the poor, immigrants, and homeless.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><b>Nowhere in the Bible<\/b> is it said that god destroyed Sodom because of homosexuality. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Two other often cited verses by Christians and Jews come from the book of Leviticus, chapters 18 and 20.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That book is a laundry list of religious rules to govern the behavior of ancient Jews &#8211; ones like rules forbidding the eating of shellfish, cutting one\u2019s sideburns, or mixing fabrics in clothing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Out of many rules like those are <\/span><span class=\"s2\">two<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> against men who have relations with men.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The breaking of any of the rules, however, was labeled an abomination. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Religious conservatives are thus disingenuous when they claim the two rules against homosexuality are universal ones intended for everyone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These people fail to provide the context in which the book was written.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Leviticus <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>was<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> written around 500 BCE after Israel had been conquered by Babylonia &#8211; today\u2019s Iraq.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That conquest is historical fact.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jerusalem and its great Temple were destroyed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many of its citizens were forced into slavery.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many rabbis of the time blamed Jewish culture for its fall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jews had become rich, lazy, uncaring and promiscuous.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Much like in today\u2019s America, the wealthy few prospered while the majority struggled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Jews were implored to care more about people than wealth, and care more about <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>being<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>doing<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> good than just <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>appearing<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> good.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And so rabbis compiled a list of behaviors to encourage Jews to return to the heart of their religion and renew their compassionate and decent ways. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When read in context, Leviticus is a document intended for a very limited audience, time and set of circumstances.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was <b><i>not<\/i><\/b> written with any understanding of science, psychology or circumstances outside of its particular situation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If it was, then Christians and Jews who today shave their sideburns, eat shrimp or wear polyester are committing sins that Leviticus says are worthy of death.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Two New Testament verses are also routinely used by conservative Christians to attack gays and lesbians.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One verse from the book of Romans, chapter 1, allegedly says women and men who sleep with same sex partners are disgusting and deserve death.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Another verse from First Corinthians, chapter 6, supposedly compares gay men to thieves and murderers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They will not go to heaven but go instead to hell.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> I have a problem with Paul as a Biblical author and teacher.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Paul was a self-proclaimed apostle of Jesus but he never met Jesus and admits to once being a militant Jew who opposed him.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And yet Paul arrogantly claims he was equal to the followers who faithfully supported Jesus before his death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Because of that fact, I find minimal value in Paul\u2019s teachings but great value in the teachings of Jesus as contained in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus never taught against homosexuality in the gospels.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is troubling to me, therefore, that Christians prefer to listen to Paul instead of their messiah Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> The two verses from Paul that supposedly condemn homosexuality are incorrectly translated and understood.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In those verses, Paul used an extremely rare ancient Greek word when allegedly referring to gay men:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>as-ren-koi-tai<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Literally translated, the word is a combination of two ancient Greek words for \u2018male\u2019 and \u2018bed.\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Translators long ago thus decided it meant men who bed with men. This word, however, appears almost nowhere else in ancient writings.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Where it does appear, in two non-Biblical documents, the word refers to people who abuse the poor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> That meaning makes more sense considering the context in which Paul wrote.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Paul spread Christianity in a self-focused Roman culture that ostentatiously displayed wealth, entertained itself with gladiator fights to the death, and encouraged sexual abuse of women, slaves, children and animals.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If one reads Paul\u2019s verses in that context and with the translation I\u2019ve described, he condemned <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>not<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> homosexuality, but rather Rome\u2019s decadent culture.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Indeed, Paul adds that the people he condemns are greedy, arrogant and boastful.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are not loving or merciful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> If you see a recurring theme in Bible verses that allegedly condemn homosexuality, you are right.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are over <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>2000<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> verses that condemn greed and indifference to the poor.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are just six supposedly against homosexuality.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When examined closely, those six verses don\u2019t even condemn same sex love &#8211; but say what the rest of the Bible does.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><b><i>The most important ethics to follow are to live humbly and care for the poor and marginalized.<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> But beyond those verses, I also believe there are Bible verses that <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>endorse<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> homosexuality.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the book of Matthew, chapter 18, Jesus addressed the issue of marriage and sex.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As a part of that discourse, he discussed eunuchs and their place in society.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For his culture, eunuchs were not only men unable to procreate, they were also gay men.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since a word for \u201chomosexual\u201d did not exist at the time, scholars claim the word \u201ceunuch\u201d included any man who did not have relations with a woman. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus says that those eunuchs who are gay are <b><i>born that way<\/i><\/b>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And he follows that up by saying they are loved by god.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Later, in the book of Acts, chapter 8, Jesus\u2019 apostle Phillip meets and baptizes a black eunuch whom he saw reading an Old Testament passage that sympathetically discusses those who are despised and rejected.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some commentators believe this eunuch was a gay man.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Jesus ethic of inclusion and love for everyone was what Phillip followed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Of equal interest is the fact that the Bible favorably depicts three possibly gay couples.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Namoi and Ruth are one such couple in the book of Ruth, chapter 1.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are strong, independent women who the Bible says loved one another like Adam loved Eve.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>King David, the most revered leader in Jewish history, had a deep and close relationship with Jonathon as described in the book of Second Samuel, chapter 1.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The two were inseparable, they embraced passionately after a long separation and David\u2019s love for Jonathon is described as greater than that for a woman. Added to these verses are ones that I and others believe suggest that Jesus was also in a gay relationship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Jesus regularly referred to the apostle John as his beloved.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At the last supper, John rested his head on Jesus\u2019 shoulder in a public display of affection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After the supper, on the night before his death, Jesus retreated to a quiet place to reflect.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The gospel of Mark, chapter 14, says that a young man, dressed only in a short, one piece tunic &#8211; male underwear of the time &#8211; was with Jesus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some interpreters believe the young man was John.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The next day, as Jesus was being executed, only his mother and John stayed with him &#8211; the two people he loved most.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even though Jesus had a brother, his last wish was that John bring Mary into his home and take care of her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Commentators believe the Bible shows that each of these three couples &#8211; Ruth and Naomi, David and Jonathon, Jesus and John &#8211; had at least homo-<\/span><span class=\"s2\">social<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> relationships &#8211; ones that were intimate, close and loving.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Bible never says those relationships were wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> It\u2019s a provocative claim to say god is gay.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s not the primary point I want to make, however.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Bible has been symbolically hijacked by religious conservatives who say it teaches <\/span><span class=\"s2\">against<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> same sex love.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They have a right to that interpretation but a more accurate interpretation of verses in the Bible is <b><i>surprisingly liberal.<\/i><\/b> <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Bible is primarily concerned not with sexual behaviors, but with encouraging acts of charity to those who suffer from prejudice, poverty and illness.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most importantly, as I said at the outset, the Bible tells us that whatever one believes god to be or not be, she is compassionate, caring and kind.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>God most certainly does not hate gays, lesbians and transexuals.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, the Bible tells us she <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>loves<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> them <b><i>just as much as<\/i><\/b> she loves all people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> I wish you all much peace and joy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(c) Doug Slagle, Minister to the Gathering at Northern Hills, All Rights Reserved.
